Saif Samejo
Saif Samejo is a musician, cultural practitioner, and the founder of Lahooti—an evolving platform that bridges folk wisdom with contemporary expression. As the lead vocalist of The Sketches and the visionary behind the Lahooti Karoonjhar Commune, Saif has spent the past two decades weaving together Sindh’s oral traditions, indigenous musical forms, and living memory into a vital and accessible cultural force.
Through Lahooti, he has created space for hundreds of artists, thinkers, and musicians to gather, record, reinterpret, and protect the deep-rooted traditions of the land. His practice moves beyond performance; it is archival, pedagogical, and grounded in a fierce love for Sindh’s soul—particularly the poetic universe of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, whose verses Saif considers both a guide and a curriculum for life.
As the initiator of the Echoes of Karoonjhar Artist Residency, Saif envisioned a space where artists could engage with the sacredness of land—where stories, songs, rituals, and resistance flow through granite hills and seasonal rivers. In Karoonjhar, as in Bhittai’s poetry, time folds. Saif’s work invites us into that fold—to listen, to learn, and to carry forward a cultural memory that refuses to be silenced.
Whether performing a sur on stage, guiding artists through the desert, or preserving folk tunes through Lahooti’s decade-long archive, Saif Samejo continues to ask: How do we keep our roots alive while imagining new futures? His life’s work is a resonant answer.
